Despite an array of brave attempts, the women ski jumpers still do not have the right to participate in the Olympic Games. The Appellate Court of British Columbia sustained the decision of not including women's ski jumping in the program of the 21st Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
The female athletes consider the exclusion of women from the Olympics a case of sexual discrimination, and have therefore petitioned for the Olympic Organizing Committee to either get women's jumping onto the program, or cancel the men's events. However, the Appellate Court overruled their appeal to the previous verdict, which stated, that the exclusion of women is indeed an act of sexual discrimination and therefore in breach of Canadian law, but all decisions pertaining to the program of the Olympics are to be made by the IOC.
The girls will most probably file another appeal, this time to the Supreme Court, but this fight will take a long time, and there are only three months left until the Olympics in question.
The VANOC (the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the Olympics) is obviously quite satisfied with the appellate court's decision. CEO of the organizing committee John Furlong emphasizes that the decision of including women in the Olympic program must come from the IOC. “We still support these incredible young women, and we see women's ski jumping in the Olympic program in the future,” said Furlong.
