Werner Schuster is known for his slightly controversial ideas, but this one is quite unusual. He's decided that his team will get their first snow jumps during this year's season inauguration in Kuusamo. Until then, Martin Schmitt, Michael Uhrmann, Michael Neumayer, Georg Spaeth, Andreas Wank and Pascal Bodmer will only train on the ice track in Klingenthal.
The ski jumping hill in Klingenthal has one undeniable advantage for the Germans – its constant availability. The competitors can use it day or night, whereas in Rovaniemi or Kuusamo, there are plenty of other teams occupying the hills. Also, the Germans can train in Klingenthal without any pressure, because their form will remain a mystery until the first competition. “In Klingenthal, we can jump when we want and as long as we want,” Schuster defends his idea.
However, the head coach is not expecting miracle results from his athletes, especially after a mediocre summer season. He would like to be in the top 5 in the team event, and to have at least one jumper in the top 10 of the individual competition. He expects Neumayer to be the closest to fulfilling this objective, as he is without a doubt the best in his team at the moment.
