Last Friday, the Austrian ski jumpers traveled to Norway for their first snow training before the start of the new winter season. The team is currently training on the Olympic hill in Lillehammer, which is the only place you'll find snow in the entire city.
They completed their first jumping training on Saturday morning. “After flying in on Friday, we were rather skeptical about the training possibilities. Fortunately, there weren't any problems,” says Alexander Pointner. “The inrun was prepared very well, the wind was also perfect, so the conditions during the first training sessions were very good. If it weren't for Lukas's tumble, everything would have gone perfectly,” adds the contented coach.
The young ski jumper fell after landing a 140-meter jump. “It was going great, and this jump was also very good. However, the ski jumping hill was pretty bumpy and hard as a result of the warm weather in the past few days. So after landing, I hit one of those bumps and fell. To make things worse, I used my face as a brake. Fortunately, I didn't break anything or get any serious bruises,” explained Lukas Müller, who was already feeling better on Saturday morning. Still, the hospital visit crushed his hopes for a speedy comeback. “Lukas has to take a break for the next few days, but he hasn't suffered any serious injuries. Aside from some bruises and chafed skin on his hips and arms, we can say that he was pretty lucky,” comments the Austrian physiotherapist, Herbert Leitner.
“This type of fall is always dangerous, not only physically, but also mentally. However, Lukas was able to get up on his own, which was a big relief. We could all go back to training. After two training rounds where each jumper completed about six jumps, the pressure lifted. Even if conditions won't allow us to continue training, I'm already prepared for Kuusamo,” adds Gregor Schlierenzauer.
Thomas Morgenstern is also excited about the coming events. “The week we spent in Egypt was exactly what I needed. I came to Lillehammer with a very good attitude, which paid off already in the first jumps. I'm in great shape after training there, and I can't wait until the competitions. I'm ready for the winter, but I don't know if the winter is ready for me,” he quips.
“The summer wasn't what I had expected. But ever since the snow is back, I've been 100% ready. That's the way it was in the last two seasons, and that's the way it is now. But the first jumps have been very promising. I have a good feeling and I'm impatiently awaiting the first competitions,” Wolfgang Loitzl assesses his current form.
