The polar city of Kuusamo, Finland witnessed a new World Cup Ski Jumping season opener this weekend. World's best athletes gathered there to compete in two events: team and individual. In the team competition Germany lost by just a couple of points with the Austrians, thanks to Morgenstern's good second jump. The order after the competiton was Austria on the first place, Germany on the second and Finland on the third.
In todays individual competiton we were able to see a very interesting introduction to the season with some remarkable jumps despite adverse weather conditions. Apparently two of the greatest ski jumpers didn't quite show up in the competiton…Adam Malysz didn’t qualify yesterday while Janne Ahonen didn't reach the second round because of his poor effort in the first round, just 115,5 meters. But it seems we have just gained another young star from Germany…it is Pascal Bodmer, who with his high performace yesterday and today, promises shiny future for the Germans. So far Bodmer has never reached the Top 10 in any World Cup competition. His best result was the 19th place in Oberstdorf in February 2009. Bodmer already jumped extremely well in yesterday's team event.
But despite all that the winner was.. Bjoern Einar Romoeren. The Norwegian (299.8 points) won with two great jumps on the difficult hill in Kuusamo ahead of the day's sensation, young German Pascal Bodmer (290.7) and the Austrian Wolfgang Loitzl (290.4), while Michael Uhrmann, the second best German, finished fourth and completed the very good team result.
Anders Jacobsen came in fifth and with that the Norwegians could take revenge for the bad result in yesterday's team event where they finished only seventh. With Johan Remen Evensen as eighth, another member of the team landed among the top 10. Also the Japanese team brought three athletes under the best ten today. Their best was Shohei Tochimoto (6th). Daiki Ito was ninth and Noriaki Kasai tenth.
But disappointing was the overall World Cup winner Gregor Schlierenzauer, who was only 19th and barely made it to the second round.
The Finns had a black day in front of their home crowd. As Ahonen and Harri Olli didn’t catch the second round and finished on the last place as 50th. Kalle Keituri was the best of the "Finn Air" as 14th. It went even worse for the Poles and the Russians. Kamil Stoch was the best of the Polish team as 24th Lukasz Rutkowski was 28th.
